Cheese World Cup

As an Englishman, marrying an Italian was always going to be fraught with pangs of inferiority.  Firstly, their weather is better.  Second, their food is infinitely better.  Thirdly, their soccer team is consistently better.  Our players look blotchy, broken and hung-over at the end of 90 minutes, while their 36-year-old midfield genius looks, at the final whistle, like he’s just strolling back from the barbers, whistling.  As of Saturday evening, we have now lost in the last two major soccer tournaments to my wife’s team.  I did what any self-respecting man would do and turned to the fridge for comfort.  What did I find?

Mozzarella.  Parmesan.  And for good measure, a ripe slab of Gorgonzola.  There they were- three little reminders of who was top dog in this house.  I know this was done on purpose.  The Cheddar was nowhere to be seen, nor my favorite nibble, a nice piece of crumbly Cheshire.  I’m sure she ate it during the game behind my back.

There are 24 teams in the World Cup this year, containing some established cheese makers like the Dutch, English and the French.  But what about some of the newcomers to cheese making, or countries that produce a local cheese you’ve never heard of?   We’ve gone through group by group to take a look at their cheese mastery.

Starting Tomorrow we will publish our  group by group world cup predictions  – so stay tuned and send in your suggestions.
